about

From liner notes:

"If you don't like reeds - free reeds, framed reeds, beating reeds - a group with three clarinets AND an accordion might be a daunting project. But unless you have a serious bias against those pieces of cane, it's impossible not to enjoy this album. A feast of sounds, colors and rhythms, its repertory encompasses the Eastern part of the Mediterranean; from the South of Italy through Balkans and Greece arriving on the shores of Asia Minor. But more important than that, the music shines with infectious enthusiasm carried on the emotional wings of different traditions, discovering under our very ears what they share and through this exploration finding new directions for the future. The connecting tissue is provided by the two great Nomadic music traditions in Europe: the Jewish and the Gypsy; the inquisitive spirit comes from that other creation of an uprooted people: Jazz, which does prominently include Middle-Eastern sources to begin with. While, ever since Morton and Ellington, clarinet trios are a key ingredient of jazz arrangement, you'll find little here of Creole sedate pastel colors: maybe the more adventurous excursions of Benny Goodman, but above all the progenitors here are Dave Tarras and Ivo Papasov, Mustafa Kandirali and Vassilis Soukas.

Liquid Clarinets was born as a live concert project and it became a disc only after the compatibility of the players was proven onstage, at the Gong Festival in the Medieval Village in Turin on the banks of the Po river, an unlikely setting for a castle-like structure which in fact was built for a General Exhibition in 1884 but by now has acquired an atmosphere of its own."
